Article – European First Year Experience Conference: Learning through a third space development community
The article reflects on how the European First Year Experience (EFYE) Conference has developed the last 20 years. This voluntary organisation, we argue, has become an effective third space development community. Colleagues will come and go as the conference moves to different countries each year in a deliberate attempt to broaden engagement across the nations of Europe, but the message is being shared. Participants operate across and within universities, working within a third space that challenges the silos that exist, and offer a focused approach to collaborative, community led, educational development of the first-year experience.

Book – 10 times the first year
The collection of chapters in this book edited by Pieterjan Bonne and Dianne Nutt has been brought together to celebrate 10 years of the European First Year Experience (EFYE) Conference. The chapters provide a taste of some of the key ideas and discussion points raised during EFYE events held in a number of countries across Europe between 2006 and 2016.
A number of key writers on the first year experience are represented here, with chapters by established writers and researchers, such as Yorke and Tinto, alongside newer authors in this fi eld. The collection provides a useful resource for anyone interested in better understanding students’ fi rst year experiences. The chapters represent both research about these experiences and examples of practices to enhance them, and would be of interest to lecturers, support staff , managers, researchers and students.
