Abstract

The DNA of “In My Experience”: This project aims to explore proactive strategies for promoting student health and well-being. Prevention rather than treatment | Students in the centre of the ecosystem | Making sense of complex problems across diverse viewpoints in the community We can focus more on: systematically connecting practice to research Preventive activities: foster student well-being in their living, social, leisure, exercise, and study environments narratives as a supplement to statistics; What other narratives exist that shed light on students’ experiences and the factors that have shaped these experiences? In addition to relying solely on data and statistics, storytelling provides us with a means to gain a deeper understanding of the lived realities of students. By exploring these narratives, we can uncover valuable insights that complement the quantitative information. Strategies like Frameworks and mindsets can serve as guidelines, allowing students the freedom to explore their creativity and devise solutions tailored to their needs. Recognizing that students possess expertise in their own lives, we provide them with the opportunity to innovate within these established structures. Students supporting students: Connecting students across levels to facilitate mutual guidance. Encouraging meaningful dialogue among students (e.g., prioritizing listening before speaking, fostering appreciative inquiry). Promoting inclusivity to ensure all students, regardless of diversity, feel welcomed. Cultivating creative and relational learning environments to foster a sense of belonging and build strong communities.  Facilitated co-creation processes with students and cross-sectoral actors, where we collectively establish shared objectives for why we co-create and what we aim to achieve together. Working systematically to translate student experiences and needs into precise actions. Actions that are interconnected and holistic for the benefit of the students.  Defining a set of shared values and behavioural expectations that promote inclusivity and respect.  Be bold enough to test actions and evaluate these to see what works for different target groups and in diverse contexts. Evidence: Utilizing the Sensemaker data collector, we’ve gathered insights from over 600 student experiences, engaging in collaborative co-creation processes involving students, university staff, and student welfare experts. Together, we’ve distilled common insights and generated ideas, further refining them into actionable concepts. Our research on student experiences has revealed significant findings on themes like belonging, mattering, and resilience, underscoring the wealth of resources within our student community. By providing them with appropriate frameworks and guidance, students can develop impactful solutions for fostering resilient communities, with support from stakeholders in their environment.
